The Real American Gothic

"American Gothic" (1930) is a very iconic and famous painting by Grant Wood (1891 - 1942), an artist from Iowa, USA. Whilst out and about one day he noted a small house in Eldon, Iowa and thought it would be great to paint.

He then got his very own sister Nan Wood Graham and his dentist Dr Byron McKeeby to model for him. Each part was painted separately. The models sat separately and never stood in front of the house!

Here's the finished masterpiece that has been mimicked, copied and parodied by so many in so many different ways over the years!
