Gamut - Time Machine

And so we come to the final track that Gamut ever wrote and this recording was our final performance of it. "Time Machine" was never ever performed on stage because shortly after writing it and perfecting it the band separated. As with the previous track (Bird of Prey) this recording was a live performance in a rehearsal & recording studio. Out of all the pieces we wrote this is the one that I am happiest with and most proud of.

From the very beginning it grabs attention with the strange guitar line and beautiful harmonics that Rick was playing on his bass. The keyboards were positively flying throughout, all played by hand too ... no sequencing here! Some odd little bits where we played around with the timing and beats and then there's the end section. I love how we broke it down to a quiet lull and then built it up again. The odd sounding solo at the very end isn't keyboard but guitar. I used a small electronic gadget called an "EBOW" which you hold over the guitar strings and the magnet inside it creates "controllable feedback" which you can then play which in turn gives the guitar an unusual ethereal sound.

Gamut were : Pat Gordon - Keyboards, Rick Willis - Bass, Russell Haynes - Drums and (myself) Justin Hill on Guitar.
